# Keep client tax data safe and used the right way

Your firm answers for every return it files and every piece of client data it holds. Here, the controls for tax information are built in. Try it on an example before you talk with us.

## Consent and IRS authorization for each use
Preparing a return is one use of a client's tax data. Pulling IRS records is another. Sharing data with an advisor is a third. Each one asks for the client's own consent, on the form the law asks for, and each signed copy is kept. If a client takes a consent back, the use stops at once. You can see who said yes to what, and when.

## Every figure shows its source
Each line on a return shows where its figure came from: a client paper, a fact your staff entered, or the IRS. Each change keeps who made it and when. A line the return cannot figure says so and names what it needs. So a reviewer can check the work, and so can you, years later.

## Filing responsibilities: who does each step
Each return shows its filing duties: who prepared it, who reviewed it and who signed it. The client's signature, the e-file and the IRS answer are kept with it. Due dates and IRS rejects are tracked for you. You always know who owns the next step. Nothing waits on one person's memory, and a new staff member can pick up where the last one left off.

## Ask us anything
Ask how long records are kept, how you can take them with you, and who else handles the data. We answer in writing, so your firm has the answers on file. Your clients can ask us too. Read [how we keep data safe](/trust). Then [try the platform](/try?for=accounting) or [talk with us](/contact) about your firm.
